My Experience at the Ironman World Championship

Paul has been a Member at the Toronto Athletic Club for over 15 years, and he decided to take up triathlon in 2011 – 8 years ago, at the age of 53 – without knowing how to swim. He worked hard in the pool with lessons and our triathlon group. He always said he would never do a full Ironman. Then, in the summer of 2018, he approached me asking what is involved in training for a full Ironman. We came up with a plan for him to qualify for Kona at Ironman Florida in the fall of 2018.

A little over a month ago, the Toronto Raptors brought basketball fans across Toronto and all of Canada to their feet, winning their first ever NBA Championship and bringing the Larry O'Brien trophy home. In the weeks since, we've continued to bask in the glow of being Champions - with very few days passing without seeing Raptors and Championship apparel around the city. And while we think we had a prime seat to witness history, our view was nothing like that of the Sport Medicine Clinic's Zahra Hashwani.

This November, the Cambridge Club has partnered with Beau’s in support of their #Beaus4Mos campaign with the Cambridge Club’s General Manager, Paul Hudson, pledging to grow a ‘mo in support of men’s health. We’re sure you know what Movember is and probably even have a few colleagues or friends participating this year – maybe you’re even growing your own ‘mo – but do you know what Movember really does and why it’s so important?

What does Movember do and why does it matter?

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. They address some of today’s biggest issues facing men, including: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention – all of which were rarely discussed before the launch (and popularization) of Movember. By funding groundbreaking projects all over the world, Movember has been able to engage men where they are, understanding what works best, and accelerating change on a local level.

Many know that Movember brings much needed attention to men’s cancers, and that’s because: 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer is the most common cancer amongst young men. Basically, our fathers, partners, brothers, sons, and friends are facing a health crisis and Movember decided to step in. But the crisis doesn’t end with cancer.

Back in 2014, Movember updated the organizations they were funding and supporting and added mental health and suicide prevention programs. This decision was made in response to the rising suicide rate among men (which is almost 4 times higher than it is for women) and the knowledge that men are at a greater risk for experiencing mental health problems but are less likely to receive the treatment and support that they need.

Funds raised by Movember campaigns around the world go towards:

  • Education: Informing men and their loved ones about the diseases they face and the importance of making informed decisions early.
  • Support: Offering support for men and those around them living with these diseases.
  • Testing & Treatments: Provide funding for better testing and treatments and the research needed to create these.
  • Quality of Treatments: Improving the quality of the treatment and care for patients suffering from these diseases.

Why is Paul participating?

This year, Paul has decided to grow his moustache in support of Movember. And while there are many important reasons to participate and support, Paul comes to it from a unique perspective.

“I am passionate about supporting others and through personal experiences realized that I can be apart of the solution to improve awareness surrounding prostate cancer and men’s mental health. I have worked in the health and wellness industry for over ten years now, providing support to those looking to improve their overall health and well-being through exercise and nutrition. I wanted to be able to help on a greater scale, and through the Movember initiative it has allowed me to work towards supporting individuals outside of my circle and well beyond who I would be able to reach within my workplace or personal circle.”

How can you help?

Throughout the month, Paul will be growing his ‘mo (and we’re betting it’s going to be pretty spectacular) and raising money in support of Movember. Our goal is to raise $2,500 throughout the month!
