Is it hard?

You’re likely used to classical movement and conventional exercise. The Gyrotonic method turns that on its head, encouraging the body to move along a complex and ethereal network and matrix in the body called fascia, with the exercises being performed through spherical awareness – meaning you understand the circularity of the movement. Every movement pattern is performed rhythmically and melodically without jerks and clenches, and are free of turbulence and interruption.
Your first few sessions will result in a definite waking up of your coordination, as you acknowledge just how disconnected from your body you have become. But with each session, you will learn how to bring all of your physical attributes back “on line,” becoming wholly aware of your body and improving your disciplined control.
Can GYROTONIC® help with my tight stiff muscles and joints?
The patented and trademarked Gyrotonic Expansion System emphasizes multiple joint articulations, as well as mobilizing, loosening, and strengthening the surrounding ligaments and their attachments. Imagine gently working a long rusty chain until each and every link in the chain is free to move independently. Not only does each local joint in the chain become free, but the entire chain finds its true and intended expression of space and mobility.
Movement is taught to be executed from the centre outward to the peripheries. So, by mobilizing the spine, that energetic information cascades outward through the shoulders, neck, head, and sky… AND the arms, pelvis, hips, thighs, knees, ankles, and floor.

What about my back, hip, and shoulder problems?
With Gyrotonic, special attention is dedicated to increasing the functional capacity of the spine on all possible planes of movement: arching, curling, twisting/rotation, undulating gently (like shaking out a bed sheet), or circling the ribs (as if you were showing off your hula-hoop talents). By increasing your spine’s range of movement in all dimensions, a healthy consequence emerges: balanced symmetry comes into being; and nothing is pulling or collapsing too far forward, back, left, or right. The back begins to behave as a nicely stacked series of bones and tissues, without compression.

There’s GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. What’s the difference?
A Gyrotonic session is conducted as a 1-on-1 private session, usually running for one hour. It is served by a series of specially designed exercise equipment which were built around the human body. Movements are encouraged and guided by direct, yet gentle, hands-on cues from the instructor.
A Gyrokinesis session, on the other hand, is performed as a group-based scenario without the use of the specially designed equipment and the individual, guiding, hands-on attention. The work is done incorporating the use of stools/chairs and mats, as well as exercises done in the standing position.
However, the heart and intention of Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic are the same: each exercise being synchronized with a corresponding breathing pattern; mobilizing the spine and all joints while releasing, lengthening, and strengthening the musculature and tendons; and learning how to move on fascial networks, opening up energetic pathways.
